Every day 7 million people suffer with cardiovascular disease. Living with a heart problem can be debilitating, frustrating and sometimes very frightening. Many patients rely on friends or family members to care for them and to transport them long distances to attend appointments with specialists. As people live longer lives and more survive cardiac events, the 7 million figure is set to rise.
Cardiovascular disease is the cause of 1 in 4 deaths in the UK, equivalent to 435 each day. Of the 515 people who suffer a heart attack each day, 190 will lose their lives.
Age is a key factor in cardiovascular disease. The prevalence of cardiovascular disease increases significantly after 40. According to the Office for National Statistics, the percentage of the population aged 40 or over in the South West is expected to increase to 25.6% for males and to 28.1% for females between 2011 and 2021, higher than the national average.
