HeartSWell provides individual and group counselling free of charge for heart patients based in Plymouth.

Counselling for heart patients, their carers and families

Are you someone who is recovering from treatment for your heart problem, such as a heart attack or heart surgery, or trying to adjust to the diagnosis of a heart problem or a carer or family member of a heart patient?

Do you find it difficult to make sense of what has happened to you?

Following a diagnosis of a heart problem it is not unusual to have fluctuating moods. One day you feel up, the next feeling very down. You may at times feel anxious, tearful, irritable, frustrated, low and fearful for the future. These feelings are not uncommon and will lessen in time. Talking over what has happened to you and sharing your thoughts and worries will help you to make sense of what has happened and help you to feel more positive and in control of your life.

HeartSWell South West have entered into a partnership with the organisation Simply Counselling to provide free counselling sessions to heart patients, their carers and family. Counselling provides a space for you to explore your difficulties and problems with someone who will listen, understand and accept you as you are.

The team

Simply Counselling has a team of around 20 counsellors trained in a variety of counselling methods and offer high quality counselling. This means that they have a whole range of counselling expertise to offer you and will match you to the counsellor most suitable to work with you and your concerns.

How much do I have to pay?

We offer a free counselling service to people with heart problems from Plymouth and surrounding areas.

Whilst the staff at Simply Counselling are experienced counsellors and work extensively with people who have illnesses, such as people recovering from a stroke, they are not clinically qualified. They are able to discuss your health concerns with you, but you will need to see or talk to your GP, practice nurse, or cardiac rehabilitation nurse regarding your medical condition and treatment.
