Our peer support services are here for anyone affected by heart disease across Devon and Cornwall

What is peer support?

Peer support is when people use their own personal experiences to provide knowledge, emotional, social or practical support to help each other. Peer support can take a number of forms such as mentoring, being an ear at the end of a telephone, face to face meetings, group support and online forums.

How does peer support work?

We have a number of peer supporters who have kindly volunteered to shared their experiences with us and have outlined the support that they are able to offer to others. If you request peer support for yourself or a loved one, we look to find you a peer supporter who may have had similar experiences and who is able to provide the type of peer support you are looking for e.g. to meet face to face or to speak with on the telephone.

We then provide you with some information about your proposed peer supporter and some further details around how peer support works in practice. Once you agree to go ahead with peer support, we provide the contact details of your peer supporter and make a formal introduction between you both.

Who supports our peer supporters?

Once your peer support starts, HeartSWell provide on-going supervision and support to your volunteer peer supporter. We are also here should you have any questions or queries once your peer support starts and we work with both parties throughout the peer support process.

What if I don't get along with my peer supporter?
